Tomato, pepper and cucumber beds

tomato beds

Tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers have been planted in the beds at the top of the garden. They are not visible from the street but you can see them from the alley entrance.

5/18-21 Weekend

We will be picking up tomatoes/peppers/cucumbers/squash and other seedlings today from both Howard County Public Schools and Baltimore City. We want to get them planted on Sunday afternoon/evening. Hope some of you can make it to the planting. We will follow it with a BBQ/Potluck if we get enough people coming out to make it worthwhile. So the weekend schedule if as follows:

SAT 1 pm-4pm: We will finish prepping the rectangle beds for the new seedlings and work on the herb garden and medicine wheel plot as well as anything else we see needs work. I am working Saturday School in the AM this week so I am getting out there later than usual.

SUN 3-7 pm: We will plant the new seedlings and water them well. Hopefully the city will have the water in asap!

PLUS: WE WILL BE HAVING OUR FIRST HARVEST ON SUNDAY!! Come and get some of the greens we will be cutting back: Kale, collards, mustard and lettuce. We will also make a salad of fresh greens for the BBQ! Come and enjoy.

Herbs are planted… and a grant deadline approaches

We had a productive weekend around the garden, even with the cloudy weather Sunday and the ominous signs of impending rain all day. Instead, it held out until today and so we were able to get the new herb seedlings in the ground just in time for a welcome shower. They are looking great today.

Pass by and check them out, send back suggestions about what else we should put in the empty spaces in 2 rows. So far, we are going to

▪  add more chives on the first row then fill the rest of the row up to the future entrance with Dill. It grows tall and broad with great flair and nice flowers to go along the path.

▪  We are going to add another Rosemary “bush” to the 3 up front

▪  a few more oregano and sage alongside the others

▪  we have parsley and cilantro, we could try water cress which I love

▪ …..but we still have several spaces for another 3-4 plants of an herb or two…

▪ then there is still the medicine wheel location for the “select” culinary herbs and medicinals (a list of which I am drawing up, if anyone wants to help me)

…HERB SUGGESTIONS?

I hope we all had a good time saying thanks to our moms, maybe in some cases for reasons like sharing her interest in gardening/farming.

Look for pictures of those herbs coming soon and a list of what we put in.

NEXT UP: moving some trees we have into place and preparing the rear 9 beds for lots of tomato, pepper, and cucumber seedlings we will plant this weekend.

5/11-13 WEEKEND PLANS

The city has promised us we will have our water hooked up within the next 10 days. So, we can be assured soon that we be able to sustain all that we have planted these past few weeks. For that reason, I am waiting to plant the tomato/pepper/squash/cucumbers that the Howard County Public School system will be providing us (and Baltimore City at their 5/19 plant give away). Look for that planting next Sunday. THIS Sunday we will get the herbs in the ground and hope that we can keep them sufficiently watered with our water tank until the city water is in.

Lets all thank Alec for sacrificing his Wed. afternoon to help mow the lawn. We were interrupted by the rain but will finish in the very near future. Thanks also to Evan for providing the great John Deere mower!!

First flowering

First flowering

Some of the mustard greens have started to flower already. We will need to start eating some of the greens this weekend. We hope to make a “first salad” this Sunday for our BBQ after we plant some herbs in the new herb beds.

The Medicine Wheel Herb Garden

The Medicine Wheel Herb Garden

This is the first stage of the herb garden we want to build. The outer ring will be for medicinal herbs, the inner ring for select culinary herbs (we have another larger area for bulk culinary herbs). In time we hope to host chefs for special cooking demonstrations, “performed” in the center of the wheel surrounded by herbs, vegetables, and neighborhood guests.

A View From Above

A View From AboveWith the hard work of Mark, Alec, and Jay we have ready for planting: the Herb Medicine Wheel (the concentric rings– one for medicinal and one for culinary herbs) and the Bulk Herb Bed (left corner bed is for lotsa parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregeno, and basil, etc). Stay Posted for planting dates and BBQ to follow—we are thinking maybe Sunday afternoon…any opinions, write me!
